How can a Climate Fresk Workshop Support Sustainability and Eco-Friendly actions ?

by | Mar 29, 2024

We know one of the challenges for climate activists, sustainability advocates and green champions is to engage fellow citizens, students, suppliers, clients and staff on a more sustainable and eco-friendly path.

The Climate Fresk workshop is an innovative, yet low tech tool from Europe that helps galvanize groups of citizens, students, employees, suppliers, clients and elected officials or civil servants to act on climate change, in an engaging 3.5 hour session.

It is ideal when combined with a sustainability plan or eco-friendly initiatives at the neighbourhood, city, school, university, non profit, corporate or national level.

Below is a 1minute video on what a Climate Fresk workshop looks like:

Litterally Bringing Parties to The Table

The Climate Fresk litterally brings a group of up to seven stakeholders to a table – a physical one- where they’ll collectively engage in piecing together the climate change puzzle, based on the unequivocal, globally produced IPCC ( Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) reports.

This innovative pedagogy came out of founder Cédric Ringenbach’s frustration teaching climate science in university. He succeeded in better engaging his students using a low tech (and low carbon) approach: they had to come to a consensus on placing a set of information cards on a physical table in a cause and consequence pattern. This pedagogy made understanding climate science, a very complex and litigious topic, clear, collective, engaging and easy.

Galvanizing Participants to Engage in Eco-Friendly, Sustainable Actions

After the first part of the Climate Fresk workshop, participants generally come to the same conclusion that climate change is an urgent issue they will be impacted by, and many ask how to act.

The other parts of the workshop help participants express their emotions when faced with anxiety-producing information as well as their creativity. This helps channel their feelings in a more positive manner.

The last part of the workshop is designed with the group or organization to steer participants towards acting on eco-friendly and sustainable action plans that may be in place but are looking to gather more engagement.

In a corporate setting, employees feel energized by this team-building exercise and willing to support their company’s sustainability efforts, often adding to them.

In a neighborhood, a faith group or a common interest group, the workshop is tailored to engage more participants in eco-friendly community efforts.

Kids & teens’ mental health & development at stake with Canadian schools adopting distance learning well

What’s at stake, if teacher unions remain opposed to synchronous learning and governments like the one in Ontario focus on the number of video sessions a teacher must hold each day, as a replacement for research-based efficient elearning techniques? Simply a cohort of students ‘ mental health and intellectual capabilities. And down the line, what is at stake are increased inequalities among youth and a loss of sovereignty for Canada, when private foreign online players persuade parents who can afford it to sign up to their online learning programs for their kids.
