Who are some of Canada’s youth activists that are using TikTok to further their cause ? This is part of the We Stop Scrolling research project Tech for Good Canada embarked on in September 2021 with Ontario Tech University’s innovative Steam-3D Maker Lab.

Here are the causes we’ve been curating influencers on since September 2021 on WeStopScrolling on TikTok (and WeStopScrolling on Instagram, with different content):

  • Indigenous culture
  • Indigenous issues
  • Climate Change
  • Body Image
  • LGBTQ2i+
  • Disability
  • The Environment
  • Mental Health
  • Black Lives
  • Asian Hate
  • Rape Culture

To access the videos from these social media activists, you can go to this address on a computer https://www.tiktok.com/@westopscrolling, or to the WeStopScrolling account on the TikTok app on a smartphone. You may need an account to sign in.

We’re reposting some videos here from our YouTube Tech for Good Canada channel as well, for easier access.

Teaching Digital Citizenship Skills to Canada’s Students

The research is part of a project that is open to all Canadian students, teachers and schools that wish to leverage social media for educational purposes.  More and more now know social media is not designed with children’s and teen’s mental health or safety in mind.

During the winter 2021 term, we’re inviting secondary teachers in Canada to watch this 40 minute presentation on how a class can participate and develop digital citizenship skills on TikTok and Instagram to fight the addictive, sexualized and violent content that’s all too present on today’s unregulated digital media.

We also have partnered with an emerging local digital news media in the Toronto area for young adults: The Green Line.to, by reposting some of their activism-focused content, like this interview of climate activist Allie Rougeot you can see here on their Instagram account.

Follow the We Stop Scrolling account on TikTok to discover what causes young Canadians are talking about on these social media, from climate change, to mental health, to indigenous issues, black lives matter, asian hate and body image.

And tag @WeStopScrolling if you’re between 13 and 18 and are expressing yourself about a cause online to take part in our challenge to stop scrolling and start acting online until December 2021 and maybe win prizes from Decathlon mega sporting stores or Indigo stores.

Kids & teens’ mental health & development at stake with Canadian schools adopting distance learning well

What’s at stake, if teacher unions remain opposed to synchronous learning and governments like the one in Ontario focus on the number of video sessions a teacher must hold each day, as a replacement for research-based efficient elearning techniques? Simply a cohort of students ‘ mental health and intellectual capabilities. And down the line, what is at stake are increased inequalities among youth and a loss of sovereignty for Canada, when private foreign online players persuade parents who can afford it to sign up to their online learning programs for their kids.
